When you come to Kenya as a volunteer
we advice you to see how the things are going before you
start with all your enthousiasm. Check what the duties of
the staff are, what the rules are, how the day is going,
from waking up the children to bring them to school to put
them in bed in the evening. There is a schedule for the
volunteers which shows your duties. One or two volunteers
are bringing the children to school together with the askari
the guard, the others are having breakfast with the young
ones and take care about them. Then you start cleaning the
house while Rama the cook is going for shopping for lunch
and anyone who is interested can enjoy him. Lunch is
prepared at home for the young children while the others
remain in school and have lunch there. The volunteers who
woke up early for school or had baby shift in the night
might have a nap in the afternoon. From about 16.00 pm
children are coming from school picked by the volunteer in
charge. Dinner is prepared by the cook while the volunteers
are helping the children with their home work. Before dinner
the young children are showered and after dinner the older
children. Bed time between 19.30 and 20.00 pm. The children
are assisting in the house as well with cleaning, washing
dishes and clothes.
