About the animals in Kenya

 There is a lot of wildlife in Kenya. You can spot the animals of the big five: the lion, buffalo, elephant, leopard and rhino. But there are also many birds, insects and monkeys.

If you go on safari you have a big change to meet these animals:

 -          Lion
The king of the jungle is the lion. They live in a group up to about 30 lions. The lions are predators and hunt for meat, like antelopes, zebra’s and wildebeest.
Most lions spent there days sleeping and resting. When it is time to hunt, a group of females will go out to the savannah together. To catch a prey to have to work as a team.

          Buffalo
When you think of a cow, you don’t think directly of a buffalo. But a buffalo is a real African cow. This animal has a special status in the savannah, buffaloes can be very dangerous and even a group a lions will not easily hunt for them.
You can recognize a buffalo by there curving horns on there forehead. A male can weight up to 820 kg.

          Elephant
A beautiful family animal, big, grey and with a big trunk: that’s an elephant. Female elephants live in small groups between 10 and 20, the male elephant (bull) lives alone. An adult elephant eats 250 kg food a day, mostly grass, leaves and other vegetation.
An elephant can life for 70 years.

          Cheetah
The cheetah is the fastest land animal, he has a top speed of 120 km p.h. The body of a cheetah is made to make a high speed hunt. A cheetah’s long tale makes that he can make sharp movements to catch his prey. Sometimes they bring there pray into a tree to be save from other hunters.

          Rhino
The most recognizable about the rhino is off course his nose with a big horn. White rhinos life in East Africa, mostly in Nakuru National Park, black rhinos are very rare.
A rhino is well known of his temperament that can change every moment in a anger attack.
A rhino eats vegetation and is mostly found near a drinking place.

          Giraffe
This animal can grow until 5 meters and is the highest animal in the world. Because of the extreme height of his neck a giraffe can eat leaves of the treetops. He has such a strong tong that it does not matter when there are sharp  between the leaves, a giraffe even can eat leaves of a acacia.

          Zebra
Zebra’s are famous because of there huge migration during the year. They travel around Kenya and Tanzania searching for green grass and water.
Every zebra has different marking of black and white stripes. Baby zebra’s are able to recognize there mother in a group by the patron of stripes.

          Warthog
They are famous about the tale that is going straight up when a warthog is running. Most people have to laugh when they see a ‘pumba’. Under there eyes you will see the warts. Warthogs eats mostly grass, but they also like fruit and bark.

          Hyena
Did you knew that the chewing of a hyena is so strong that they can crush bones?!
A hyena has a shaggy appearance with long manes and big ears. A hyena has a big attitude, they dare to bother a lion to steal some of his prey. Hyena’s mostly hunt at night and try to catch young or sick animals.

          Hippo
If you go to a river or lake in East-Africa it is possible to spot a hippo. These animals float many hours of a day in the water. They seem to be small when you only can see there eyes, ears and noise above the water, but they mass up to 2000 kg. Cows with young babies are aggressive to other hippo’s. At night they will come out of the water, in the cool darkness they are grazing 40 kg of vegetations. When a hippo are on land they can be extremely dangerous, they can run fast with their short legs.

          Impala
Extremely common are impala’s, they live in the open savannah and also the bushes. Males wear beautiful shaped horns. Impala’s are unique animals with no close relatives. They are preyed by the large carnivores of the savannah.

          Gazelle
When you see a group of zebra’s, antelopes and wildebeests you will definitely spot gazelles. These small animals eat dry grass. During the big migration they are the closing line. The looks are beautiful, there are tree species common in the region, the Thomson gazelle, the Grant’s gazelle and the Gerenuk.

          Wildebeest
Wildebeest are grazers and move constantly in search of grass and water. Together with zebra’s are the wildebeests very common at the savannah. These two animals seem to life together without any competition. The wildebeest is not very elegant or beautiful, but the big migration of large groups is something you will never forget. 

When you go on safari you will see a lot more animals. You can meet:

flamingo’s, pelicans, bush babies, vervet monkeys, blue monkeys, baboons, genets, mongooses, aardwolfs, leopards, crocodiles, caracals, wild cats, servals, foxes, jackals, wild dogs, klipspringers, dik-diks, steenboks, hartebeest, topi, antelopes, oryx, kudus, elands, waterbuck, antbear and…thousands of birds, fishes and insects!!!
